JOY REID: MSNBC National Correspondent

Hundreds gathered to celebrate the Ann Arbor Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, Founders Day Brunch, at the Sheraton Ann Arbor. Joy filled the room literally and figuratively as friendship and acquaintances were made and remade. Throughout the inclusive program, attendees mentally, if not emotionally, rededicated themselves to serving and strengthening our communities.

In fact, “Forming Community In Inhospitable Climates” was the topic of Joy Reid’s wide-ranging speech which acknowledged the hostile circumstances under which Black Sororities and Fraternities were founded in the midst of domestic terrorism during the Lynching Era. Reid took the audience to last week’s 50th Anniversary of the Selma to Montgomery March for Voting Rights with her eyewitness-to-history reporting. She commented on the recent SAE Fraternity racist chant exposé, noting the organization was founded just down the road from Selma, during Slavery. And Reid recalled the love, strength, courage, conviction and sisterhood it took to form community in all these inhospitable places we have found ourselves in throughout American history. Ever upbeat and engaging, Reid ended with the reminder that we have even more power now and a stronger duty perhaps, to tell our own stories. President Obama’s historic election is but one point in our illustrious history of overcoming. The Founders of Delta Sigma Theta and other pioneering organizations saw themselves not as victims but as women (and men) who would triumph over oppression. We must hold dear that vision of ourselves, our children and our communities, and ever be victors over an oppressive living legacy of racism and discrimination. Hail To The Victors and all who uphold our advancement. Aluta Continua!
